I completed my first forge weld today. I used 5160 spring steel ( leaf spring ) and prepped everything, fluxed and was surprised i got it on my first try! The only thing i wasnt happy about was the hole. I only had a crow bar to wrap it around and its way small, but i am going to see what i can do to make it larger tomorrow. This will head to the belt sand and get its final shape. I want a nice light mouse hawk.

After cleaning up a bit. I want to add a sharper cleaner edge at the top, so I will do that tomorrow and then wait for the drift to come in so i can open up the handle hole.

Yes the first inch or so will get heat treatment. Next one, I'll do a speed up video showing the process to make one.

Veggie oil is good, that's what I use. Use natural oil. Never motor oil or anything harmful. It's the fumes that'll get you.

Hi ,I have a few of these, all 1840 or earlier.
You seem to be on to the forge weld,,but as a kid the blacksmith always, reinforced each time the importance of the base metal,(you could never make a race horse out of a donkey) and how to season it .
I am problely not suggesting anything that you don't know already. Straw..
Both my kids carry these as the general purpose over a big knife, you always have your light axe in hand ,..which has shown to be the difference between 0.095....sec on a boar charge and wild bullocks.
We keep ours polished and so thankful that they can be as sharp as...it's nuts...
Regards Ben.

Ben.
