Lew's underhammer 12 ga. used to belong to me! In a serious moment of weakness I made a trade/sales deal with him. I had it custom made for me here in Washington State. The gun smith has since moved back to Idaho. He did do some custom work for me on another underhammer rifle build. I'm not sure if he is still doing this type of work. I could check with him if there is interest? The rifle build is being completed by me (stock work, browning ect.).

Pecotnica River sells underhammer kits. I’m building one in .44 caliber with a 1:17 twist green mtn barrel.

Keep us posted on it, I have been contemplating doing the same thing, I have a New 34” Green Mountain 1:18 Twist Barrel that i would likely use

Lewis, I hope to get to work some on it this week, but doubt I'll be able too with all the customer's guns I have to work on.

The above picture is the twin under hammer project to Lewis' shotgun. John Taylor provided the action and fit the barrel for me. The wood set is from Pecatonica Longrifles. I have started the wood work and will update as progress is made. 50 cal Grn Mtn LRH barrel.

Did you leave the Barrel 32” inches? Have you made up your mind on What Sights you are gonna put on it?
If i end up building one of these it will be a LOOOOOOONG Ranger I think it would be SUPER Cool to Shoot one of these Long Range (800 to 1,200 Yards) The trigger will be really important for me, I am so accustomed to 10-14 Ounce Set Triggers that its Hard for me to Adjust to Heavier Triggers
Re: Big Gobbler with my 12 Gauge UnderHammer
I left the barrel alone so she's still 32". I had the rear of the action D&T for a small Skinner peep sight, similar to what I have had mounted on my White in-line. For the front sight, I bought a skinner brand partridge style to go with the peep. Ihave made some nice progress with the butt stock....Hmmmm, maybe I will hold back the pictures to make you suffer in silence!!

The under hammer design is very practical, and interesting. I really want one! Would like to see pics of any underhammers that others are using. I have been eying my dads custom under hammer ML for 30 years now!

Re: Big Gobbler with my 12 Gauge UnderHammer
Idaho, does that shotgun have any choke? If not at what range did you shoot that big gobbler? I am wanting to use some older guns I have for turkey for, sentimental reasons, but have not because I didn't think they could take "turkey load" type loadings, but 80 grain is just 3 drams and 1&1/8 of shot is not anywhere near the 2 ounces the "turkey experts"
are using.
are using.

Re: Big Gobbler with my 12 Gauge UnderHammer
I'm once again the owner of that underhammer shotgun. Lewis bought it from me after a turkey hunt a couple years ago. Out of the kindness of his heart, he sold it back to me. I can't say what range he shot his at, but I took a tom with that same gun about 5 years ago. Range was about 25 long steps (under 30 yards). Just for comparison, I've shot two toms with an old 16 ga double with modified chokes. 1 1/8th oz #6. Range was once again in the neighborhood of 25 yards. Don't sell your old guns short. They just aren't "Magnums" so range just has to be closer.

Re: Big Gobbler with my 12 Gauge UnderHammer
Harley thanks for the reply. From my reading over the years on the subject, I was aware old muzzleloading shoguns had no choke as the wads were bore diameter and would not fit in. I suppose also, in the beginning, choke hadn't been thought of yet. I have also read of more modern guns having some choke and even others having screw-in chokes. I was P.O.I. testing, a couple of weeks ago, the 20 ga my father bought me for my twelfth birthday, so many years ago, and was surprised that with 1 ounce and 7/8 ounce loads it put enough pellets in a turkey target to be effective at 30 yards. That single shot would be significantly lighter than the 11-87 I've been lugging around and the idea of calling the big birds in closer would only add to the challenge.
