TC Hawken Front Sight
Looking to get a long range front sight, already have a rear sight, for a .50 TC Hawken. Could I ask from the experience here what are my options?

Re: TC Hawken Front Sight
I just bought a Lyman globe sight for my Hawken. I wanted a .404" (17AHB) height but they were not available so I bought the .494" (17AMI) which should be good enough for my needs. The .404" height would allow to shoot longer distances with the same rear sight.

Get yourself a 17 Series Lee Shaver Globe with Spirit Level, Along with a Card of Shaver inserts for it
Re: TC Hawken Front Sight
The Lee Shaver adjustable front sights are AWESOME, But are best with a Soule type Tang sight. This is what i shoot on my Serious Long Range Rifles, they are as good as it gets
Re: TC Hawken Front Sight
They are nice Lew but honestly out of my price range and more than needed for my purposes.
Not that I can't afford them it just that I like to spend my money on other things. Those Soule tang sights are pretty costly.

Bronko, I was just answering the OP’s question, he asked about a “Long Range” Front sight and i gave him 2 of the best options available, with the best Value being Shaver, Others like MVA Cost Double what Lee Shaver’s Cost for the Same thing, and they do NOTHING more. Now If he had asked for a Budget front sight? I would have advised the Lyman 17 Series
The Fronts sights i mention are not a Luxury, they are a MUST if you are serious about Long range Shooting with a Peep sight, and plan to have Repeatability. Think about my Long Range Rifles that i am shooting to 1,200 Yards, Do you think i could do this without a Level? NOPE!! They are an ABSOLUTE MUST if you want Repeatability.
Re: TC Hawken Front Sight
I agree with you Lew. I guess I got confused because we talked about the globe sights but that was on a pvt conv. I know the importance of a level because I use one on my CF long range rifle.
For me long range with a muzzy would be 400 yds. No way I could do what you do without lots more practice which I don't have the time for.
BTW my 45 cal 1:20 twist is shipping tomorrow from Hoyt. He does excellent work.

A level is critical for Long Range, if you want repeatability anyway. Especially so with a Muzzleloader and BIG Lead. Take my 1,200 Yard shoots for example, i am using up almost all of my Staff on my Shavers Long Range Soule sights at that Distance, that is almost 3 inches of Staff, If i didn’t have a Level there would be X amount of Kant in every Shot, I am Human, there is no way i could guess/Hold Dead level each Shot. A TEENY FRACTION of Kant at 1,200 Yards and my Bullet will Hit MANY MANY FEET off.
If a guy is serious about Shooting Long Range The LAST thing he had better do is Skimp on the Sights, it will bite ya! The Rifle is only as good as the Sights allow it to be. This is just not an area to Skimp in. I have about 600 Dollars a piece in the Sight systems on my Long Range Rifles.
Good deal on the Hoyt 1:20 Twist, will be looking forward to seeing your Range reports with it I only had 1 Barrel done by Hoyt, and to be honest i wasn’t at all happy with it

Re: TC Hawken Front Sight
This is the initial 100 yard target with my .58 flintlock barrel he made for me. 100 gr of Goex FFg, .570 PRB .018" pillow tick with olive oil lube. I had sighted it at 50 yards to get it close then moved out to 100. First shot was wide right, sight adjust and 2nd closer, another adjustment and fired the next 3 shots. This is with plain old semi buckhorn rear sight and bead front sight. I'm very happy with his work. Oh yeah, this was charge weight by volume before I started to weigh my charges. The small hole is my 375 Win 94 that I took an offhand shot with. (inserting rotated pic 90* right)

Idaholewis,
May I ask what is the length of the PP bullet you’re shooting in the .50 cal TC out to 500 yards?

They are 450 Grains
Here is a picture of them after i had “Short Patched” a few for testing. These are Awesome Shooting Bullets in my 1:48 Twist Rifles. If a guy likes Paper Patch Bullets, it doesn’t get much better than these With that said, I am not Crazy about Paper Patch Bullets in Muzzleloaders for several different reasons
Re: TC Hawken Front Sight
OK. What are the reasons? Don't leave is hanging!
