Here's the situation: T/C built the Renegades (and I think the Hawkens as well) originally without a through bolt (screw) from the tang to the trigger guard. A lot of them cracked on the left side across from the lock, so to handle that, T/C ran a through bolt to reinforce that area. I've heard they had an upgrade kit for that.

I have a Renegade with a cracked stock and wood screws rather than the through bolt. So it needs the upgrade - even though the previous owner said the crack never got worse during his ownership.

So here's the problem: The through-bolt isn't a big deal - they're available, or I've even made them myself. The hole in the tang needs to be enlarged slightly, so that's not a problem either. It'll be a little tricky drilling the through-hole through the stock, but I've got that under control

The problem is the threaded hole in the trigger guard.

Why not just buy a trigger guard that's got the threaded hole? I've looked on ebay and not one of them has it. Must be eight or ten listed, all are the early style.

The threaded hole goes in at an angle and needs to be done precisely so it's deep enough, yet doesn't break through. It's a very precise drilling, and then bottom tapped.

Have any of you done this job? Any hints? Tricks?

Thanks in advance!

IMO, if its a Renegade trigger guard drill through would be no big deal because the guard is steel. You can purchase a bolt slightly longer than what you need then finish it flush to the Renegade guard then either blue the end or heat it red hot and dip in oil to blacken it. A Hawken's trigger guard is brass so I could see that posing a cosmetic problem.  Personally I could live with something cosmetic.

I'd thought of that Bronko. I could even weld up the break-through if it came to that.

You could bet then you would probably get uneven metal flow into the hole. BUT, if you finish the bolt end to the contour of the trigger guard you would have it at the same tension every time?!
Another option if you can do it is to open the crack slightly and force some epoxy or wood glue into it.

I've been thinking about this and here's the current plan:

Since the stock isn't drilled through, the first step is locating the tang screw exit point at the trigger guard. Then with the drill press and a locator pin on the table, drill it through.

Then install the trigger guard and using the same drill, start the hole into the trigger guard.

Using wood buffers in the drill press vise, securely mount the trigger guard at the correct angle and carefully drill to the correct depth.

I'm thinking the trick is exactly locating the hole into the guard and going slow and careful.
