range results with the original
I mentioned in an earlier post that I had done some work on a, in very poor condition, rifle from at least the early 1800s. I turned it into a smooth bore because it was just so badly rust filled. I took it to the range today and using 50 grains of RS Pyrodex, a 20 thousandth lubed patch, and some .451 round balls I shot this 5 shot group at 25 yards. I held the sights on the bottom point of the large diamond to place this pattern. It was fun but each time I ram a ball down the bore I'm afraid I'll bre

That is a pretty good pattern. Nice shooting. Are you going to go to 50yds.?

If I can find the time I would like to make a high front sight to lower the impact point. Then I may try 50 yards. The front sight is a piece of brass sheet metal folded in such a way as to make the blade and the base. I tried making one, but it is not easy.

Re: range results with the original
Well, I have to own up. I went to the range today, zeroed the gun at 26 yards, then moved the target out to 50 yards. TERRIBLE!!!
I saw a video by a fellow's channel called duelist1954 and he demonstrated using a Brown Bess and Fusil De Chasse that both of his guns require heavy powder charges to get accuracy. 110 grain of 2f for the 20ga Fusil and I think 120 grains 2F for the 75 caliber. Perhaps that is what I must do? I have been using 60 grains and it won't do the job at 50 yards. If I go to 80 grains and it won't shoot I make hooks for the wall. Either it is that, something else, or my eyes. I have to admit that at 50 yards that target is not coming in really clear. Anyway, I will test some more and then try shot loads.
