Hi from Alaska, I was given a Hawkins 50 side lock this winter, and have shot it about a hundred times so far. Those of you that cast your own RD ball how true is the diameter? I'm casting with a lee mould and can only get about.002-.005 out of round from true. With these .490's it groups about 1-1/2" at 35 yards that doesn't seem very good. 85 gr pyrodex P Thoughts?

There are a lot of things you can try with Patched Roundball, Ball size (.490, .495) Different Patch materials, Patch thickness, the size of the Patch in diameter, Different Patch lubes, the use of an Over Powder patch, Powder type & charge amounts. It’s impossible for anyone to tell you what your gun will shoot best, This is something you will have to do on your own. What kind of sights do you have on your Rifle? Are they fine enough to get better accuracy than 1-1/2 inch at 35 Yards? If they are factory/stock sights they are NOT
The best patch material i have ever used is stuff i get from Joanns Fabric called Dril Cloth, it measures .020 Thick. The patch lube i use is stuff i make, Stihl HP Ultra 2 stroke engine oil, and Peanut oil mixed 50/50, I also use an Over Powder Patch to Protect the Patched Ball.

Yeah stock sights,I have been following your YouTube channel and have been experimenting with patch material, thickness and lubes. Thanks , your patch lube sounds good! I'll try it next

It works really for me
Good sights are really a MUST when it comes to getting the most out of your Rifle. For Targets i swear by the Globe front sights, and Tang Peeps. For hunting i go with a Fiber Optic bead Front sight, Red or Green
Re: new member
How big of a sight picture do you get with the peep sight, does the globe front sight have a cross hair or what?

I can hold on a Popcan and see it very well at 100 Yards, try that with a Factory Bead sight
I use Lee Shaver inserts in my Globe sights, they are ultra fine. The standard Shaver insert Card does come with a Crosshair He sells a Card of all Circles as well.
Globe front sights and fine inserts are the next best thing to a Scope, they are the reason i shoot Peep sights as well as i do. But be warned, They downright SUCK in Low light, you would be just about as well off with a Hammer in your hand in real Low light conditions. In short, there is nothing better for Accuracy, and nothing much worse for Hunting in Low light conditions. You are looking through a very small DARK Tunnel out on the end of your Barrel, and not much you can do to make them any better

For now target shooting is my plan for it,so I'll start watching for a good setup. My Marlin 45/70 is my hunting go to with ghost ring iron sights! It shoots out to 200yards really well. I hope to get the Hawkins out to 500 yards in time. The I bullet you use for hunting looks very interesting.

Lew I was looking at the Shavers inserts. I'm trying to imagine what the "tic tok" looking insert is used for. I'm thinking a square target.
