new guy from Texas
Hi all, I have had a T/C Hawken .54 cal for close to 30 years. It has a 1:48 twist so I reasoned why it never was very accurate and I figured it was the twist rate. I have watched Idaho Lewis's youtube videos and found that with a few tricks my gun actually shoots pretty good with both ball and conical loads.
The problem I am now having is finding bullets and powder for the .54. I used Hornady Great Plains which are not made anymore so I am looking for a replacement for those. I used Pyrodex in the past which was ok but now I am looking at Triple 7. I am going to try a Mag spark 209 primer nipple in place of the #11. I have never tried black powder but it is almost impossible to find around here and don't want to do the hazmat fee thing. I hope to get some information from the people here about ways to keep my .54 alive and kicken!

Welcome. This is a great forum. You'll like it.
dpdpete maybe you might want to consider getting that Mag Spark 209. I/ve used Pyrodex RS and P for years in my caplocks with only #11 caps and never had any issues. As for bullets to replace your Great Plains bullets you can try No Excuse bullets. They make a 54 cal 525 gr bullet. And they are top quality.
And if you decide to get into casting your own bullets you can get a 450 gr Lyman Great Plains mould for your 54.
