Barrel coning
I'm considering coning the barrel on one if not both of my .58 cal sidelocks. From what I understand coning allows you to start a patch and ball without the need of a short starter. It does not effect accuracy as it only shaves off a bit of the lands and thr PRB still rides on the grooves in the rifling.

Re: Barrel coning
i have a .54 coned to maxie length. i can start a maxie to where the tip is flush with just my thumb. PRB is a snap. this is five maxies with 5 different batches of homemade BP .wanted to see the consistency i was getting. 85g fffg. range 65 yrds. coning didn't seem to be detrimental to accuracy at all. i am sure the rifle can do better with a shooter behind it.

Re: Barrel coning
Its been a while since I posted this and forgot all about it! I am going to have too many pans in the fire now and a short time to do everything I want to do. I have a newly rebored 45 cal Hawken barrel with a fast twist to finish up and sight in and a few other projects. Coning will be on the back burner for a,while.
