Williams FP Hawken? Empty Williams FP Hawken?

Post by Kurt 22/01/23, 09:17 pm

Hello, Does anyone use this sight on a TC Renegade and does it work with the factory front sight? I have decided to make a change because my rear open sight is turned down as far as it goes and the gun shoots about 4 inches high at 50 yards, and I think, or I'm hoping, my shooting might improve with an aperture sight. Thank you in advance!

I just ordered a Williams for my Hawkin. I'll post my thoughts when I get it mounted. I suspect it will help with front sight picture greatly. I have used peeps on many other rifles and they always help my aging eyes and kept me hunting with irons.

I bought a Williams FP and put it on my Hawken today. I made a sight for my Renegade Flintlock but have yet to try it. If it does not work out I will shift the Williams to the Renegade and perhaps buy another for the Hawken.

I supposedly will have cataracts removed this year. Hopefully I'll still be able to use my iron sights. But, the future may be to go to a peep sight.

I have two friends who had cataracts removed and the lenses they put in give them both near and far vision. They couldn't be happier with the results. I hope it goes the same for you!

I just put one on my hawken and had to change the front sight height to the .570 from Lyman to get it zeroed at 50 yards.

Forgot to add.. I had the same problem with open sights and got the FP Hawken to see if it would help. Be sure and get the larger target aperture about size of a quarter. The sight, aperture, and front fiber optic is a complete game changer.

I wanted to mention that today I tried my homemade aperture sight. I am pleased and hopeful. After some glitches, I shot three consecutive shots that touched at 50 yards. I have to adjust the elevation some but I'm pleased so far.

I mounted this peep way back near the snail on a .50 Lyman GP Hunter barrel. It came with a pretty tall fiber optic front sight. Maybe .470 or so. Damn thing has an enormous bore. Like .505"! It shoots the knurled fury bullets great but if you leave it loaded for a day or two the bullets just start sliding toward the bore when you point it at the ground. I ended up using smokeless powder sabots because they fit super tight in the big barrel with .45 jacketed bullets and it's shoots under 2" 3 shot groups at 100 yds. I really like this sight. I prefer to barrel mount vs tang mount bc I'm afraid of the articulation point at the hooked breach changing with humidity or if I just jam it in there different. My solution is to just drill and tap as far toward my eye as possible on the barrel. It works really well for me. I've gotten some sub MOA groups this way with globe sights but I'm mostly a hunter and I go back to larger peeps and fiber optic posts and the groups open up a little but I can shoot well in low light like this.

Sorry. I didn't know what I was talking about. Mine is the WGRS octagon barrel peep. Its not an FP. My bad.

I have shot up all my RBs so I have to cast more before any more tests, but I have the homemade sight zeroed to the point that at 50 yards I can keep them all in the 5-inch bull. I really don't think I can do better than that unless I get a narrower front sight. I'm not sure I'll do that. Maybe, but, maybe not?

Forgot to post that the Williams sight on my other rifle, luckily, zeroed with it topped out in elevation and about 3 lines of windage remaining to the left. Interestingly, both my guns need a good bit of left adjustment to zero. I didn't need any shims or filing.

I ordered some .050 thick front sights with 3/8" dovetail a while back. Been meaning to shoot with them to see if I can get a little more precise sight picture and if I can still shoot in low light. Got a brass one and a silver one. They were like $8 on TOTW.

For those waiting for Wiliams to get their 57 out to dealers, I will suggest this; I made an aperture sight that is a very crude copy of a sight a member here posted a picture of. I can't find it again to give them credit, but I will say it is nice. The sight is not adjustable but if you do some measuring of your rear sight and the location of its adjustment you can make a fixed aperture to match. Below is the sight I copied from this forum.Williams FP Hawken? Peep-d11

I built the courage to post my crudely made aperture. If a slot was made for the screw close to the flint and a lock washer used under the screw head there would be adjustment for windage as well as drifting the front sight. Careful measurements of your existing rear sight are used for the aperture hole position. This was the simplest sight to make, and it works. The hole I drilled is smaller than the aperture on the Williams FP.

I blacked it because it is of brass and the glare inhibited my ability to see even when in shade and sighting at a target in sunlight.
