lyman GPR alligator teeth for rifling

This is the inside of my Lyman .50 cal GPR after wrapping 0000# steel wool around my cleaning jag and about 150 stokes, can't even tell I did anything going to lead lap next.
was going to start with valve grinding compound. 
Any thoughts???

I used the valve compound lapping method on a TC renegade with a badly rusted/pitted bore. It did however open up the bore significantly. Using a .495 ball and .18 patch it is not as tight as I'd like and the accuracy shows. It does however, shoot the hornady penn conical really well. Thought it was hopeless, but it saved the barrel! I bought this rifle on GB, item description said "bore looks good" it was not. Luckily I only paid $180 with a 2.5x simmons in a TC one piece mount on it.

well I got my barrel lapped it was stubborn took awhile to get rid of the alligator teeth lol

I used the longest machine screw I could find that screwed into my cleaning rod and used some aluminum foil on the end as a plug. it took awhile to get rid of those machines marks. I can still just barely see them in a spot or to but it is alot better than it was can't wait to get a chance to shoot it.
I even got the globe front sight put on. No more excuses now lol

I was thinking it would. I am curious to see what patch and ball size he settles on. And how much it changed.

60gn by weight of triple 7 fffg

.012 Linen patch
neatsfoot oil for lube
this combo is now too looses I think

the lower left hand shot was the clean bore shot

the next combo I tried was
.015 pillow ticking
60gn triple7 by weight
over powder patch
I wiped between shots on all groups
neatsfoot oil for lude

last group was with 1.5fg swiss 80gn by volume

it was getting late and started to get hard to see
th.015 patch loaded really tight I wouldn't want to load it with a wooden rod but this combo did load alot better than before I lead lapped the barrel
I still have work to do on the barrel as it is still blowing out patches

What are you Lubing your patches with?

I missed it above, i see now where you said Neatsfoot oil

I would try Stihl HP Ultra & Peanut oil as Patch Lube. Patch Lube makes a HUGE Difference

Do you have access to a Joann’s Fabric store? If so, Get yourself some Pocket Drill material and give it a Try, it is by far my Favorite stuff. Mine is .020 Thick

I have a Joan's fabric not to far away and I will get some the next time I am that way. I got some stihl hp ultra I will have to you track down some peanut oil. thank you for the input

Well we are definitely on track now, I still haven't got a chance to get to the fabric store and get some pocket drill. I did get a chance to make up some more .015 pillow ticking patches made and lubed the with half husky 2 stroke oil "I didn't have any stihl oil" and half peanut oil. that made a big difference in loading. THANK YOU for the advice idaholewis on patch lube.




My first shot at at these target landed right in the middle of the stickers. I was aiming for the top sticker so I adjusted my sight up about 3" them shot the three shot group at the top sticker
.490 round ball
.015 pillow ticking
2stoke oil/peanut oil lube
over powder patch
80gn by VOLUME of swiss 1.5fg

the second group by the bottom sticker was
the same as the top group the only difference was that I used 80 gn by WEIGHT of swiss 1.5fg
that group measured 1 1/2" outside to outside and that was at 58 yards that is my best group out of this gun so far

I shot about 30 thor bullets through my dad's cabelas hawken years ago and it got rid of those. No clue how they make that consistent chatter in there!

I know it took alot of lapping to smooth it out, I have never seen a bore like that
